When to Buy Your Cruise eSIM (Before vs. on Arrival)
For most travelers, the best time to buy a cruise eSIM is a few days before departure.
This gives you time to check compatibility, choose the right plan, install the eSIM using reliable Wi-Fi, and fix any setup issues before boarding.
Keep in mind that buying, installing, and activating an eSIM are not always the same thing. Depending on the provider, you may be able to buy and install your eSIM before your cruise without starting the plan until later.
When Should You Buy a Cruise eSIM? The Short Answer
The best time to buy a cruise eSIM is usually a few days before your cruise.
Ideally, you should also install it at home or before boarding while you still have access to reliable Wi-Fi. This gives you enough time to make sure your phone is compatible, complete the installation correctly, and solve any problems before the ship leaves.
However, always check when your specific eSIM plan starts. Activation rules vary between providers. Some plans begin only when the eSIM first connects to a supported network (for example, our cruise eSIM plans), while others may start when you install the eSIM, activate it manually, or even when you purchase the plan.
You can also buy a cruise eSIM after arriving at the cruise port, but this is generally less convenient. You may have to rely on terminal Wi-Fi, your regular SIM's mobile data, or onboard Wi-Fi to purchase and install it. For the easiest setup, buy and prepare your cruise eSIM before embarkation day whenever possible.
Buying a Cruise eSIM Before Your Trip
Buying your cruise eSIM before your trip is generally the easiest and safest option.
You can take care of everything while you still have reliable internet access and plenty of time to check that your eSIM is ready to use.
Why Buying Before Your Cruise Is Better
One of the biggest advantages of buying early is having time to compare your options.
Cruise eSIM plans can differ in data allowances, validity periods, countries covered, and at-sea coverage. Instead of choosing a plan quickly at the cruise terminal, you can check which one best matches your itinerary.
Buying before your trip also gives you time to:
Check eSIM compatibility. Make sure your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked before purchasing a plan.
Install using reliable Wi-Fi. A stable connection at home or your hotel makes downloading and installing the eSIM much easier.
Fix problems before sailing. If the eSIM doesn't install correctly or you have questions about activation, you still have time to contact your provider.
Avoid embarkation-day stress. Cruise terminals can be busy, and setting up mobile data is probably not something you want to deal with while checking in and boarding.
Avoid searching for internet after boarding. Once the ship leaves port, you may no longer have access to a terrestrial mobile network and could need ship Wi-Fi just to purchase or install your eSIM.
You can also have your cruise eSIM installed and ready while keeping your regular SIM active.
On a Dual SIM phone, your regular SIM can remain available for calls and texts while the cruise eSIM is used for mobile data.
How Early Should You Buy Your Cruise eSIM?
For most travelers, buying a cruise eSIM several days before departure is ideal.
This provides enough time for setup and troubleshooting without purchasing the plan unnecessarily far in advance.
A practical timeline is:
Several days before departure: The best option for most travelers. You have enough time to install the eSIM and check your settings without rushing.
One to two weeks before departure: A good choice if you want extra time to compare plans, confirm compatibility, and prepare everything in advance.
The day before departure: Usually still fine, especially if you've used eSIMs before and already know your phone is compatible.
Embarkation day: Possible, but not ideal. Any installation or compatibility problem will need to be solved before the ship leaves or while you still have reliable internet access.
Most importantly, check the provider's activation and validity rules before buying. Some plans don't begin until they first connect to a supported network (e.g., our plans), while others may have a validity period that starts after purchase, installation, or activation.
Checking these rules prevents you from accidentally using up part of your plan before your cruise even begins.

Should You Install Your Cruise eSIM Before You Leave Home?
In most cases, yes.
It's best to install your cruise eSIM before you leave home, as long as your provider's instructions allow it. Installation requires an internet connection, so setting everything up using reliable home or hotel Wi-Fi is much easier than trying to do it at a busy cruise terminal or after boarding.
However, installing your eSIM doesn't necessarily mean your data plan starts immediately. It's useful to think of the process as four separate steps:
Buy → Install → Activate → Connect
These steps may happen at different times. For example, you could buy your cruise eSIM five days before sailing, install it at home over Wi-Fi, and then keep it disabled until your trip. When it's time to use it, you enable the eSIM according to your provider's instructions and connect once a supported land or maritime network becomes available.
Does Installing a Cruise eSIM Start the Plan?
Not always. Activation rules vary between eSIM providers and plans. Depending on the plan, its validity period may begin:
When you install the eSIM.
When you manually activate the plan.
When the eSIM first connects to a supported network (our eSIM plans are activated when they connect to a supported network)
On a specific activation date.
This is particularly important if you've purchased a plan that's valid for a fixed number of days. For example, you don't want to install a 7-day plan several days before your cruise if installation immediately starts the validity period.
Before installing, check exactly what triggers activation for your particular plan. If the plan only activates when it first connects to a supported network, installing it before departure can be a convenient way to have everything ready without wasting any of your plan's validity.
Keep in mind that activation may require an internet connection. If you plan to activate your eSIM right before the cruise, do so while you're still on land and have access to mobile data, reliable internet, or free Wi-Fi.
Once installed, check that the eSIM appears correctly in your phone's SIM settings, but don't enable it for mobile data until instructed by your provider.

Can You Buy a Cruise eSIM After Boarding the Ship?
Yes, you can usually buy a cruise eSIM after boarding the ship, as long as you still have an internet connection.
Because an eSIM is purchased and installed digitally, you don't need to visit a physical store or collect a SIM card.
After boarding, you may still be able to get online using:
Cruise ship Wi-Fi: You can use the ship's internet connection to purchase and install your eSIM. However, onboard Wi-Fi usually isn’t free, so you may need to buy an internet package just to complete the setup.
Terminal Wi-Fi: If the ship hasn't departed yet, you may still be able to connect to the cruise terminal's network.
Another data connection: You can use mobile data from your regular SIM while the ship is still in port or close enough to land to connect to a terrestrial network. However, international roaming charges may apply, depending on your mobile plan.
It's better not to deliberately wait until the ship is already at sea.
Once the ship moves away from land, your phone may lose access to normal terrestrial mobile networks.
If you haven't installed your cruise eSIM yet, you could find yourself without the internet connection needed to download it. In that situation, you may need to purchase or access the ship's Wi-Fi simply to set up your eSIM.
Last-minute installation can also be more complicated because some eSIMs require you to open the provider's app, log into your account, receive a verification code, scan a QR code, or change several phone settings.
If you've already boarded but the ship hasn't departed, install the eSIM while you still have a reliable connection. If possible, though, buying and installing it before you arrive at the cruise terminal is the simpler option.
